SD63 COMMUITY FEEDBACK SURVEY – DRAFT 2022-2027 STRATEGIC PLAN

The Saanich School Board has been working to develop a new Saanich Schools Strategic Plan.  The Board’s Strategic Plan serves as a framework through which district directions and decisions are considered and initiated.  To develop the draft 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, they engaged in a year-long process of analyzing provincial and local student achievement data, as well as having extensive consultations with students, parents/guardians, staff, and the W̱SANEĆ First Nation.

Four strategic themes emerged from this year-long process.  They are broad vision statements that outline areas in which the district will focus its actions to improve student success.

The four identified themes:

LITERACY - To improve student literacy across the curriculum for all students with a particular focus on early learning

INDIGENOUS LEARNER SUCCESS - To engage in practices that support culturally responsive and barrier-free learning environments for Indigenous students

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS - To promote mental health and well-being through social emotional learning and trauma-informed practice

CITIZENSHIP - To provide opportunities and experiences that inspire learners to be knowledgeable, curious, and active global citizens

They want your feedback on the proposed Plan.  To do this the Board has created a simple, open response survey to hear your thoughts and comments.  We hope you can find some time to provide the Board with your thoughts as they look to finalize the plan later this spring.

VACANT PAC EXECUTIVE POSITION – COPACS REPRESENTATIVE NEEDED!!

We are looking for nominations for the position of COPACS Representative for the remainder of the school year. Unfortunately, our current rep, Jude Coates, is unable to finish the year and we thank her for volunteering and for the time she spent in fulfilling this important role.

The COPACS Representative will:

a. attend all meetings of COPACS and represent, speak, and vote on behalf of the Council (the PLES PAC);

b. maintain current registration of the Council;

c. report regularly to the membership and executive on all matters relating to COPACS;

d. seek and give input to the COPACS on behalf of the Council;

e. receive, circulate, and post COPACS newsletters, brochures, and announcements;

f. receive and act on all other communications from COPACS;

g. liaise with other parents and COPACS representatives; and

h. submit an annual report.

Who Are COPACS?

The Confederation of Parents’ Advisory Councils of Saanich (COPACS) is the official representative for School District 63 Parents' Advisory Councils. Every school has a Parents' Advisory Council (PAC) and each of these is a COPACS member. Their primary task under provincial legislation is to advise the School Board on “any matter relating to education in the school district”. They are made up of an elected executive; all volunteer parents from the SD63.

What Do They Do?

COPACS is a direct voice to the Saanich School District – District staff, the Saanich Teachers Association, and the Board of Trustees. COPACS also interacts with the British Columbia Parents’ Advisory Council (BCCPAC) that provides direct input to the Ministry of Education on a wide range of issues.  They also communicate directly to parents through their “Forum” email blasts. If you aren’t already receiving them, you are invited to sign up for the blasts here: https://copacs.sd63.bc.ca/blocks/forum_email/subscribe.php?id=1

When Do They Meet?

COPACS meetings are held once a month on the second Thursday from 7:00-9:00pm, via Microsoft Teams.

If you feel like you would be a good fit for this role, or know somebody who might, we will be accepting nominations up until we undertake a vote during the next PAC meeting on February 24.  Nominations can be submitted through the PAC email (prospectlakepac@gmail.com) or verbally to either of the Co-Presidents (Carolyn Ensing or Jacquie Davis).
