Each January, families, schools, libraries and communities across BC celebrate Family Literacy Week. In 2023, Family Literacy Week will be celebrated January 22nd to 29th! This year’s theme is “Make it count! Play * Sort * Measure."  Numeracy is everywhere and we want to highlight how simple math concepts like sorting, counting, estimating and measuring are used in everyday life.

Family literacy focusses on parents, grandparents and other family members to build the reading and writing skills of the whole family. By reading to children and engaging in fun literacy activities regularly, adults actively keep their own skills sharp and also help children improve their skills too.

At Prosect Lake, we are celebrating this Friday, January 27th, with our Read Around the School Event.  Students will have the opportunity to gather some books, find a cozy place around the school, and read with their friends, siblings, buddies, or peers in the school.  Students are encouraged, but not required, to dress up as a favourite literacy character.  We do ask that all masks, weapons, or larger costume items are left at home.   

Saanich Peninsula literacy is also offering a fun way to experience Family Literacy Week with "The Great Estimation Challenge."  Further details about this exciting opportunity can be found HERE.
