School News

Coffee & Conversation: Drop in on Friday, November 27, from 8:30 onward, for a visit in the Multi-purpose Room. No shop talk, just parents, and little ones too, hanging out making friends. Bring along your hot tea or coffee. We’ll treat you to something freshly baked and sweet to eat. Till 10 am. We’ll have a play area for younger siblings too. Please join us for a chat and a chance to meet other school families.

November PAC Meeting: We had a dynamic and informative PAC meeting this past Monday. Mr. Guiguet’s Principal’s report is attached and Meeting Minutes to be posted on PAC website soon. Teacher Bev Barradell’s presentation covered the mechanics of learning to read, what Reading Recovery is, and why Reading Recovery takes place in Grade 1.  Here in Saanich the teachers work with approximately 20% of the most vulnerable in the District. Mrs. Barradell teaches students at our school and trains teachers to be reading recovery teachers within all three local school districts.

Here’s a few highlights:

By Gr. 1 teachers have a good idea of who would benefit from this program. It is 30 min, every day with 1 on 1 reading and writing assistance.

By working with these children early on, it has proven to limit the kids that will continue with Learning Assistance.

Recommended book Mem Fox; Reading Magic. Talked about how reading aloud to children is the best thing you can do for them. ‘Keep it fun.'

When practicing Home Reading at home, read the book to the child first and then let them read it.

Mrs. Barradell also suggests reading to the kids above their level. This adds to their vocabulary and comprehension of reading and writing.

Another great way to support writing skills, ask the child to write grocery lists, thank you cards, birthday cards, letters, etc. It’s ok if there are spelling mistakes.

Gingerbread House Building: It is a Prospect Lake tradition for the whole school to decorate Gingerbread houses and parents, and family members get to join the fun. On Dec 15 parents/guardians will construct gingerbread houses out of graham crackers. Stop by the multipurpose room after drop off. The kids will decorate the houses on Dec 17th in their classrooms. Parents and siblings are welcome to come and help that day as well. There are usually enough houses for younger siblings to decorate as well. Each classroom teacher will decorate at a different time that day so best check with your child’s teacher about timing etc.  We will need approx.220 houses constructed this year.

Royal Oak Middle School is holding a Holiday Craft Fair on Saturday, November 28th from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Support our local middle school and do some shopping for the holidays. Last year there were over 65 vendors! There will be a silent auction and a concession. Admission is by donation. Please contact Tracey Rompain, Holiday Fair Coordinator at with any questions.

Thank you for using envelopes to send in your PAC fundraiser orders! It has made a huge difference in our ability to process orders quickly and efficiently – not to mention preventing cheques or forms from being misplaced. We really appreciate it!
